Build Your Own Professional Practice

Interested in becoming an LIC insurance agent?

An insurance agency is a professional opportunity — not a salaried job. It involves learning the work, understanding life insurance, building relationships with families, and carrying real responsibility for the guidance you give.

If you are considering this path, you are welcome to start with a conversation. The advisor can walk you through what the work involves, what eligibility and training requirements apply, and how to take the first steps.

Becoming an insurance agent is a professional opportunity — not a salaried job. Earnings come from commission on business, and appointment is subject to applicable LIC and regulatory requirements.

The Opportunity

What an insurance agency is — and is not

An agency is not employment. It is a professional practice you build: learning the work, earning trust, and growing through experience.

Learn

Understand life insurance, client needs, and the responsibilities that come with advising families.

Build Relationships

Help individuals and families think about protection and long-term financial planning — work built on trust over time.

Work Independently

An agency is a professional business opportunity, not a conventional salaried position. How it grows depends largely on you.

Grow Through Experience

Develop knowledge, communication and relationship-management skills over years of practical work.

The Process

How the journey begins

There is no shortcut and no pressure — each step is understood before the next one begins.

  1. Enquire

Have a conversation about the agency opportunity and what the work involves.

  2. Understand

Learn about eligibility, responsibilities, and the process that applies to you.

  3. Apply

Follow the applicable LIC recruitment and documentation process.

  4. Complete Required Training & Examination

Prepare for and pass the examination prescribed by IRDAI, as per the current LIC/IRDAI requirements.

  5. Begin Your Agency Journey

Start working as an agent, subject to appointment and the applicable LIC and regulatory rules.

  6. Please note:Appointment is subject to applicable LIC and regulatory requirements. Enquiry, guidance and mentorship do not guarantee appointment.

Who This May Suit

Is this path right for you?

An agency suits people with patience and people skills more than any particular background. If most of these sound like you, it may be worth a conversation.

  • You are comfortable speaking with people and listening carefully.
  • You are willing to learn — insurance, finance and how to explain both simply.
  • You are interested in helping individuals and families think about protection.
  • You are prepared to build long-term relationships rather than look for quick results.
  • You are able to work independently and manage your own time.
  • You are ready to understand insurance products and the responsibilities of advising others.

For Women

Bima Sakhi — an opportunity for women

LIC's Bima Sakhi (Mahila Career Agent) scheme is a three-year stipendiary agency scheme exclusively for women. Bima Sakhis are LIC agents who receive specialized training and a stipend during the first three years — subject to fulfilling the scheme's performance norms — while helping families in their communities understand life insurance.

Who can apply

  • Women aged 18–70 years — minimum completed age of 18 as on the date of application, maximum age at entry 70 years (last birthday).
  • Educational qualification: Class 10 (10th pass) or higher.
  • Must pass an examination prescribed by IRDAI, as per the regulations in force.
  • Must be a permanent resident of India and an individual eligible for appointment as an agent under the LIC of India (Agents) Regulations, 2017.
  • Must be able to devote the time and attention required of an agent.

Who is not eligible

  • Employees of the Central Government, State Governments or Public Sector Undertakings.
  • Existing LIC agents.
  • Relatives of an existing agent, reinstatable ex-agent, employee, ex-employee or medical examiner — including spouse, children (adopted and step), parents, brothers, sisters and immediate in-laws.
  • Retired LIC employees or ex-agents seeking reappointment.

Stipend during the three stipendiary years

This is a stipend — not a salary — and it is payable only while the scheme’s performance norms are met, during the first three years as a Bima Sakhi.

First Year

₹7,000 / month

Per month, subject to fulfilling the scheme’s monthly performance norms.

Second Year

₹6,000 / month

Per month, subject to at least 65% of the policies completed in the first stipendiary year remaining in force at the end of the corresponding month.

Third Year

₹5,000 / month

Per month, subject to at least 65% of the policies completed in the second stipendiary year remaining in force at the end of the corresponding month.

Monthly performance norms within each stipendiary year

PeriodLives in each monthFirst Year Commission (excluding bonus commission) in each month
First 4 months1₹2,000
Next 4 months2₹4,000
Last 4 months3₹6,000
Total (per stipendiary year)24₹48,000

To receive the monthly stipend, a Bima Sakhi must complete the minimum number of lives and First Year Commission (excluding bonus commission) shown above for the relevant month of her stipendiary year, including at least one policy in that month. Shortfalls in earlier months of the same stipendiary year can be made up later in that year. No stipend is payable for months in which she remains inactive.

Bima Sakhis earn commission on the policies they sell — in addition to the stipend — and are otherwise normal LIC agents subject to the LIC of India (Agents) Regulations, 2017.

After the three years

After the three-year stipendiary period, a Bima Sakhi continues as a normal LIC agent and earns commission and other benefits as per the relevant rules of LIC of India. If an agency is terminated for not meeting the minimum business criteria and is later reinstated, she continues as a normal agent, not as a Bima Sakhi.

A possible next step

Graduate Bima Sakhis, after completing five agency years as LIC agents, may participate in the recruitment process for the post of Apprentice Development Officer of LIC, if they fulfil the eligibility criteria for that recruitment.

How selection works

  1. Submission of the required documents.
  2. Interview at the Branch Office by the Branch In-charge or an officer authorised by the Branch In-charge, to assess the suitability of the candidate.
  3. Agency code allotment as per the extant provisions for appointment of an insurance agent for LIC of India.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers, based on current official LIC and IRDAI information. Anything beyond these details is confirmed during your conversation.

Is becoming an LIC agent a salaried job?

No. An insurance agency is a professional opportunity where earnings come from commission on business, not a salary. It is a practice you build over time, and LIC makes clear that agency appointments are not salaried employment.

Who can become an LIC agent?

Any individual who meets the eligibility conditions under the LIC of India (Agents) Regulations, 2017 — including age, educational qualification and other requirements — and who passes the examination prescribed by IRDAI. The exact current requirements are confirmed during the application process.

What is the basic process?

It begins with a conversation, followed by understanding the eligibility and documentation requirements, applying through the applicable LIC recruitment process, completing the required training, and passing the IRDAI-prescribed examination. Appointment follows only after LIC completes its selection process.

Is appointment guaranteed after enquiry?

No. Enquiry is only a conversation. Appointment as an agent — and participation in schemes such as Bima Sakhi — is subject to applicable LIC and regulatory requirements and LIC’s own selection process.

What is Bima Sakhi?

Bima Sakhi (the Mahila Career Agent scheme) is LIC’s three-year stipendiary agency scheme exclusively for women, launched in December 2024. Bima Sakhis are LIC agents who receive a stipend during the first three years, subject to fulfilling performance norms.

Who is eligible for Bima Sakhi?

Women aged 18–70 years (as on the date of application, with a minimum completed age of 18) who have passed Class 10 or higher, are permanent residents of India, and pass the examination prescribed by IRDAI. Central/State Government and PSU employees, existing agents, and certain relatives of agents, employees and medical examiners are not eligible under the scheme.

Is Bima Sakhi a salaried position?

No. LIC states that appointment under the Bima Sakhi scheme is not treated as a salaried appointment as an employee of the Corporation. Bima Sakhis receive a stipend for the first three years only if they fulfil the scheme’s performance norms, and earn commission on policies sold in addition to the stipend.

What happens after the Bima Sakhi stipend period?

After three years, a Bima Sakhi continues as a normal LIC agent and earns commission and other benefits as per the relevant rules of LIC of India. Graduate Bima Sakhis, after completing five agency years, may participate in the recruitment process for the post of Apprentice Development Officer of LIC if they fulfil the eligibility criteria.
